Happy New Year!! I know it's been a while since I've posted and I do apologize. I love to blog about random "happenings" and "goings on" but the fall and winter are always very busy times. Since my last post, we've added a laundry room to the house, traveled down home twice, held a number of church events and enjoyed the holidays with family. Wow!
During this busy time I tried to make myself as useful as possible but I did have an occasional attack of awkwardness here and there. What else would you expect?
Our church was hosting a community event this past October. My husband worked so hard the months leading up to this event and it was a great success. I must take a moment to brag on my husband and church family. We had overwhelming participation and support from our members and I am just so encouraged by their love and outreach. We host what is known as "Neewollah" (Halloween backwards). We offer free food, games, and candy to our community in hopes of sharing the gospel. We had 23 give their heart to Jesus that night!!!
Now, I simply love all things creative and fun. I wanted my family to dress up for this event but after nearly a month of laboring over what 3 biblical costumes we could come up with, I finally realized that our outreach target would have no idea who we were supposed to be. Coming up with nothing, I finally asked my little guy what he wanted to dress up as..... Peter Pan. We could do that! So I got to work. I sewed, and sewed, and sewed. I did look into buying costumes but that was a big NO after seeing the price of Peter Pan costumes and Tinkerbell's lack of coverage.
I was very pleased! Pleased that my little guy said,"Awesome!" upon seeing himself in the mirror, pleased that I was Tinkerbell and quite covered, and simply ecstatic that my husband agreed (hesitantly) to be Captain Hook and wear a funny wig.
Upon arrival I met 2 Mimes, Glenda from the wizard of Oz, a friend in a poodle skirt, a Bird, the Cat in the Hat, Uncle Si, a Sumo wrestler and many more, all from my church! On my way into the building, a couple of little girls from the community asked to have pictures with Tinkerbell and honestly, this blessed me so much. While I was thinking of my family and my little boy, it did not occur to me that our joyful, lighthearted costumes could bring a "wow" moment to the children in our community.
So, "What's so awkward about all that?", you may ask. Well, over the course of the evening, my husband was so busy with details of the event that he hadn't a moment to eat any of that delicious food. So, trying to be the loving, useful, pastor's wife I long to be, I went through the line and got my husband 2 hot dogs, a bowl of soup, and a nice cold water. The event was coming to a close and I knew that he wouldn't have time to eat it until afterwards, so I carefully carried it through our sanctuary and into his office. This is the point in which I just knew if anything awkward was to happen it would be a bowl of chicken soup and 2 chili dogs staining the sanctuary carpet. A legacy to my awkwardness if I may, but that's not what happened. I gracefully made it to the office! His desk chair was a little in my way, so I bumped it with my hip and proudly placed the food neatly on his desk. At this point I heard the sound of water hitting the floor, then felt water splashing my feet. I panicked! Where was it coming from?! I pulled his chair towards me and realized that I had bumped his chair into the computer desk behind it, where once stood a tall glass of water. It was a MESS! Not to mention the stack of extremely important looking papers, that were now swimming laps around his keyboard. I scurried around searching for rags, paper towels and anything to soak up this huge dilemma. At this point I'm saying over and over in my mind,"What are you doing?! What have you done?!" Then I heard a familiar voice behind me start to screech aloud with me,"What are you doing?!" All I could keep saying over and over was,"I don't know!" All while waving my hands about. She came to my aide. She sopped up water while I draped the soaked papers around his office like holiday decor. I was going to have to explain to my husband that I brought him two chili dogs, a bowl of soup and a bottled water all for the price of a computer and one stack of important paperwork. Yay. Fortunately, only one of those papers was important and dried out just fine. My husband wasn't a bit angry and, wow oh wow, are we blessed that I didn't ruin that computer. (Or keyboard for that matter) Thank You, Jesus!
I know we are always entertaining angels but I imagine that the ones I entertain often look like this:
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, (Ephesians 6:7 BOOKS)
Don’t just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ’s servants doing what God wants you to do. And work with a smile on your face, always keeping in mind that no matter who happens to be giving the orders, you’re really serving God. Good work will get you good pay from the Master, regardless of whether you are slave or free. (Ephesians 6:5-8 MSG)
